Westward Ho! We're going to Bristol on Feb 22

January 19, 2020

On February 22nd, the Free Radicals are heading down the M4 for our first show outside of Reading.

We are teaming up with Bristol-based troupe Rising Ape Collective to put on a double-bill of science-inspired improv.

We're not sure how many of you will be able to come and see us, but the intent is to bring Rising Ape back to Reading for a return fixture later in the year.

Guest speaker for our February show will be Amélie Beedham.

Amélie is a Chartered Engineer, currently working as a Safety Engineer at Thales. She graduated from The University of Sheffield and, 15 years later, found herself married with children and questioning her gender identity.

She has transitioned over the last few years so is in the prigvileged position of seeing the world of engineering from both sides of the gender divide

Our new pizza base in Reading!

January 17, 2020

Following a successful trial this month, we are pleased to announce a permanent move of our shows to Thirsty Bear on King's Road in Reading.

Thirsty Bear's upstairs room has a projector and screen which enables us to incorporate new games into our sets.

It also has its own bar. And the cabaret-style seating means you can enjoy the show with pizza and ice cream!

What's not to like about that?

Matthieu de Carbonnel, Plant Scientist (S4E4)

December 13, 2019

Guest speaker for our January 17 show was Matthieu de Carbonnel, plant scientist and entrepreneur.

He spoke on 'The Secret Life of Plants: How they sense and respond to stress".

The troupe hadn't heard the talk before and were inspired to improvise a series of sketches around the theme.

Check back soon for video of the show on our Show Archive page.

Dr. Vicky Boult, University of Reading (S4E3)

December 02, 2019

Guest speaker for this show was Dr. Vicky Boult from the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Reading. Her talk was about the importance of elephant contraception.

Inspired by the talk, the Free Radicals improvised a world of delinquent teenage elephants, discovered the illegal trade in unwanted elephants Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Kruger, and shopping for explosives at the Grenade Mart.
